They are known as "suburbs," "suburban cities," "outer cities," "exurbs" or metro-area communities. Whichever name you choose, these are the communities that were built near the Major Cities and whose existence, in general, have depended on the major city for public transportation, jobs, radio and television stations, daily newspapers, cultural activities, political leadership and regional identity. We defined them as incorporated areas of more than 100,000 within the MSA of a major city. These 92 suburbs and outer cities have a combined population of more than 14 million with an average population of about 156,000.
